What Is Boat Oxidation and Why Does It Happen?

If you've owned a boat on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for more than a season or two, you've probably noticed it: a dull, chalky, faded look creeping across your hull or deck. Gelcoat — the outer surface of most fiberglass boats — is a resin-based finish that looks glossy and vibrant when new. UV radiation breaks down the molecular bonds in that resin over time. When the resin degrades, pigment particles scatter light instead of reflecting it cleanly, and you end up with that chalky, faded appearance.

On the Gulf Coast, three unavoidable factors accelerate this process:

  • Salt air and spray — mildly abrasive and hygroscopic, meaning salt draws moisture into the gelcoat's micro-surface

How to Spot Oxidation Early

Catching oxidation early matters — at mild stages it polishes out without aggressive compounding, which preserves more of your gelcoat's depth. Here's what to look for by stage:

Mild oxidation:

  • Surface looks slightly dull or lacks the "wet" gloss it used to have
  • Gelcoat feels faintly rough or powdery when you wipe your hand across it
  • Color looks faded compared to shaded areas (like under a bimini or canvas cover)

Moderate oxidation:

  • Obvious chalky or hazy appearance across large areas
  • White or light gelcoat looks dingy or yellowish; darker colors look washed out
  • Fading is notably worse on sections with the most sun exposure

Severe oxidation:

  • Thick chalky film that comes off on your hand when you rub the surface
  • Micro-cracking or pitting visible on the gelcoat
  • At this stage, restoration requires aggressive compounding and may not fully recover the original depth

A quick field test: wipe a small area with a damp rag and a mild cleaner. If the spot briefly looks glossy and then goes dull again within a few minutes, the protective layer is gone and you're looking at active oxidation.
